How to Search the Rio Grande County Court Docket
Start with the Colorado Judicial Branch Docket Search filtered to Rio Grande County. It is free. No account is needed. The tool answers when and where a hearing is set, but it does not show every filing or build a full Rio Grande County Register of Actions. For the court's chronological account, use a Judicial Branch-linked real-time record vendor or ask the Clerk of Court for the ROA.
Venue matters too. Rio Grande District Court handles felonies, larger civil matters, domestic relations, juvenile, probate, and water cases. Rio Grande County Court takes misdemeanors, traffic, small claims, protection orders, limited civil cases, and early felony proceedings. A town citation may stay in municipal court.
- Read the citation, notice, or filing to identify the court and complete case number.
- Select Rio Grande County, a date or range, and at least one more filter.
- Enter the year, case class, and sequence, or search by party or attorney.
- Match the date, time, hearing type, courtroom, and appearance type to the case.
- Request the ROA or a named document from the clerk when the calendar is not enough.
The official Rio Grande County court landing page is the local route into court services.
That official page connects the online docket search to the court that keeps the underlying Rio Grande County case file. The same clerk office stands behind both.
Rio Grande County Docket Search Fields
The docket form asks for more than a name. A date is required in practice. The tool warns that a date alone will not work, so add a second filter such as location, court type, case number, party, or attorney. The date range can reach six months. A short window is easier to review when a setting may have moved.
| Field | How it works | Useful detail |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Select Rio Grande County | County code 53 |
| Case number | Enter year, class, and sequence | Example: 2026CR123 |
| Party | Choose Individual or Business | Use formal spelling |
| Attorney | Use name or bar number | Exact bar number is strongest |
| Date | Choose range or exact date | Add another filter |
The county-filtered Docket Search shows the form used for Rio Grande County court dates.
Print and export controls can preserve a working calendar. Still, recheck the live result before court.
What a Court Docket Shows
Colorado offers two related products. The free Docket Search lists scheduled events. The Register of Actions is the chronological account of a case. A Rio Grande County court docket result can show the current date, start time, estimated duration, public caption, case number, hearing type, court location, appearance type, and courtroom. What it leaves out matters just as much. There is no full charge detail, no complete filing list, no document images, no financial history, and no judgment text.
| Case number | A filing year, class, and sequence such as 2026CV30001. |
|---|---|
| Hearing type | The scheduled event, such as a status conference, motions hearing, or sentencing hearing. |
| Appearance type | A remote designation when populated; a blank field does not authorize WebEx attendance. |
| Register of Actions | The dated case history, including entries that the public calendar does not show. |
| Filed document | The actual pleading, order, judgment, decree, ticket, or other clerk-held item. |
A hearing label is not an outcome. “Sentencing Hearing” does not prove the sentence entered. Nor does “Motions Hearing” disclose the ruling; the ROA and the signed order settle those questions.
Rio Grande County Docket Classes
Case-class letters steer any Rio Grande County docket search. CR marks a District Court criminal case. M points to misdemeanors, and T to traffic. C covers County Court civil matters, CV District Court civil cases, and S small claims. DR, JD or JV, PR, and CW signal domestic, juvenile, probate, and water matters. Trust the live portal's selected class, because a party name alone cannot establish jurisdiction.
- CR
- District Court criminal case, generally a felony prosecution after filing or transfer.
- C and CV
- County Court and District Court civil classes, which route to different jurisdictional dockets.
- M and T
- Misdemeanor and traffic classes on the County Court side.
- ROA
- Register of Actions, the chronological account rather than the hearing-only calendar.
- Reset
- A replacement setting after a court-approved change; it is not a dismissal.
Note: No local entry-code manual exists, so use full court event names instead of guessed abbreviations.
Which Courts Keep Dockets
Rio Grande Combined Court is one Judicial Department clerk operation serving two trial courts. That shared counter does not erase the jurisdiction line. Municipal clerks keep their own ordinance and traffic records. Appellate review runs on a separate docket in the Colorado Court of Appeals. Federal matters sit in PACER instead.
| Court | Rio Grande County docket slice | Search route |
|---|---|---|
| District Court | Felony, major civil, family, juvenile, probate, water | County 53 calendar, ROA route, clerk |
| County Court | Misdemeanor, traffic, small claims, limited civil, protection orders | County 53 calendar and clerk |
| Municipal Court | City ordinance and municipal traffic cases | Issuing city court |
| Colorado Court of Appeals | Appeals from District Court decisions | Separate appellate docket |
A felony complaint can start on the County Court side. Later it may proceed under a District Court CR number. That path explains why two settings or class identifiers show up in related paperwork.
Rio Grande County Docket Filing Scale
The official 12th Judicial District overview counted 512 Rio Grande County District Court filings in fiscal year 2024. County Court added 1,447. The combined total was 1,959. County Court volume was about 2.83 times higher. That mix reflects how much traffic, misdemeanor, and preliminary felony work sits at the limited-jurisdiction level, not proof about any single case.
Search results still turn on venue, class, and current settings. Aggregate counts cannot tell whether a particular Rio Grande County court record is public, sealed, archived, or filed in another court.
Finding Court Dates and Settings
The latest notice or order comes first. The Rio Grande County court docket then confirms the listed date, start time, estimated duration, hearing type, courtroom, and appearance type. A VIRTUAL display sends you to the official local virtual-room page for the right room. A blank appearance field does not permit online attendance.
Rio Grande County Court sets civil return dates on Wednesdays at 9:00 a.m. A return date is an answer or appearance milestone. It is not a trial date. Status conferences, pretrial readiness conferences, motions hearings, and review hearings each mark a different stage. The full Rio Grande County court calendar process explains how to verify those settings.
Court information comes through different routes. The Judicial Branch court-record search page spells out which route fits which need.
Calendars, ROAs, and filed orders answer different questions.
Rio Grande County Docket Reset Checks
Think of a reset as the follow-up to a continuance. The continuance moves a hearing; the reset is the setting that replaces it. Rio Grande County's Register of Actions may still show the original notice alongside a later minute order. Docket Search aims to reflect only the active calendar.
Asking for a continuance does not free you from showing up. Only a court order changes that duty. When dates disagree, weigh the newest signed notice against the current Docket Search entry. Recheck close to the hearing date, above all when weather or a courthouse closure is in play. For an urgent question, call Rio Grande Combined Court at 719-657-3394 or email RioGrandeClerk@judicial.state.co.us. The clerk can tell an old Rio Grande County court docket entry from the date now in force.
Setting conflict: Do not rely on an older calendar printout when a newer order or current clerk instruction gives a different date.
Public Access to Dockets
Access to a Rio Grande County court docket hinges on the record itself. Its security level matters too. Chief Justice Directive 05-01 governs access to court case records. It sorts information into Public, Protected, Restricted, Suppressed, and Sealed categories. Colorado's Criminal Justice Records Act also allows reasonable custodian rules. It honors legal limits on disclosure. Juvenile and certain family records carry protections of their own.
Key Rules:
Chief Justice Directive 05-01 controls public access to Colorado court case records and recognizes different security levels.
C.R.S. §§24-72-304 and 305 address inspection rules and limits for criminal justice records.
C.R.S. §19-1-304 places special limits on juvenile records.
The current access directive page records the governing policy and amendments.
A blank online result can come from filters, venue, an expired setting, archival status, or an access limit. By itself it proves nothing about whether a case exists.
Rio Grande County Docket Access Layers
Three layers of access get mixed up often. Use the free calendar to confirm a current hearing. A Judicial Branch-linked commercial service can supply a real-time index and ROA data by name or case number. The clerk hands out the official ROA and the filed documents. Vendor results are no substitute for official copies of pleadings or orders.
Colorado Courts E-Filing is narrower still. After registration and a court-approved opt-in, an eligible party can reach documents. Those documents must be in that party's own case. It is not a public repository for unrelated Rio Grande County court files. The non-attorney CCE instructions lay out that limited role.
The attorney e-filing access page separately describes public real-time ROA vendors.
Those official pages tell the real story. Filing access, public calendar access, and complete Rio Grande County court record access are simply not the same service.
The Clerk and Docket Records
The Clerk of Court at Rio Grande Combined Court holds the case files. That covers both District Court and County Court. Don't confuse that office with the elected Rio Grande County Clerk and Recorder. That office covers elections, recording, and motor vehicles. It cannot certify a trial court judgment or hand over a criminal ROA. Municipal court clerks keep their own city-code and municipal traffic files.
Name the exact product you need: an ROA, a plain copy, a named filed document, or a certified or exemplified copy. Bring the full case number if you can. Without one, give a party name, the approximate filing year, the case type, and the Rio Grande County location. Protected material may require government-issued identification and proof of lawful access.

Rio Grande County Docket Copies
For a remote request, the statewide Record and Document Request Form is the clearest route to a Rio Grande County court record. It gathers requester contact information, case identifiers, county, parties, document types, and whether you need certification. Timing varies slightly by version. The online form promises a response within three business days absent extenuating circumstances, while the downloadable form says to allow three to five business days.
What can you request? An ROA, a complaint or information, a disposition or sentence order, judgment products, family orders, probate records, tickets, or other named items.
| Product | Published charge |
|---|---|
| Nonparty name search with ROA | $5 |
| Certified or exemplified copy | $20 per document plus copy cost |
| Transcript of Judgment | $25 |
| Certificate of Satisfaction | $20 |
| Off-site retrieval | Actual cost |
Paper-copy pricing varies across official interfaces, so confirm the estimate with the clerk first. Archived retrieval, postage, and review can push the cost higher.
Rio Grande County Docket History
Rio Grande County dates to 1874, with Del Norte as its seat. Its first purpose-built courthouse rose in 1884. Replacement work began in 1939, using native stone and nearly 100 workers. Offices moved into the partly finished structure in 1942. World War II halted the job at that point. Work resumed in 1949, and a cornerstone ceremony and formal dedication followed in 1954.
Today the Judicial Branch runs Rio Grande Combined Court in Room 204. The court docket has gone digital statewide as well. Docket Search offers a browser-based calendar. Colorado Courts E-Filing handles filings and own-case party access. WebEx serves designated hearings, and separate vendors run real-time ROA searches. No official source pins down a local launch date for those tools. The official Rio Grande County government site gives county context apart from the judicial system.
That split between county government and the state Judicial Department is still the key to finding the right clerk.
Court Dockets by City in Rio Grande County
Rio Grande County contains four incorporated municipalities, going by 2020 Census whole-place counts. Municipal court files stay with the issuing city court. State cases from those same communities may land in District Court or County Court at the combined court. Check the caption on your citation or notice before searching. A city name alone never proves the filing venue.
Monte Vista Court Docket
4,247 residents. Verify whether the citation names a municipal court or Rio Grande County Court.
Center Court Docket
1,929 residents in the whole bi-county municipality. Confirm whether Rio Grande or Saguache County is named.
Del Norte Court Docket
1,458 residents. Del Norte is the county seat, but town and county files remain distinct.
South Fork Court Docket
510 residents. Route a local citation by the court printed on it.
The population figures describe whole municipalities, not court caseloads. The four towns run their own municipal courts, and no unified municipal ticket portal exists for them.
Rio Grande County Docket Venue Check
Venue decides where your Rio Grande County court docket search should point. State trial cases live on the Judicial Branch calendar. The ROA route and the Combined Court clerk also carry them. Municipal matters go through the issuing town's own court contact. Federal cases run through PACER and the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado. Appeals move on a separate appellate docket, so don't expect them on the trial calendar.
A blank result rarely means the case doesn't exist. First check spelling, Individual versus Business mode, the date window, case class, and filing year. Then ask whether the matter is municipal or federal. It may sit in another county, or off-site in storage. Some cases are simply not set for hearing yet, or access-restricted. A docket search tells you what is scheduled. It is not a ruling or a final answer. Need the actual pleading or order? Use the Rio Grande County court records request instead.
Note: A current hearing search and an official certified case file serve different needs. Confirm each through its proper source.
